How to use Solar mode on your Project EV Car Charger

In this guide...

We will show how to utilize the solar functions of your app:

Please check with your installer that they have installed the CT clamp that comes with your charger. If this has not been installed, please refer them to the below video:

After CT clamp has been installed, please follow the guidance below:

FOR LAPTOP SETUP

  1. Follow Step 1-15 of How to commission your charger using a laptop
  2. Ensure Power Allocation Charge is Disabled
  3. Set and Reboot
  4. Once charger is showing available on your app, you can choose from 3 different modes
    1. Fast - Charger will work at full capacity
    2. ECO - 6A will be provided from the grid and any excess solar power will be sent to the charger
    3. ECO+ - Charger will only use excess solar (requires 6A excess to start the charge)
  5. We recommend ensuring the charger is in Plug and Charge mode when using ECO and ECO+ modes as the charger will automatically start if there is enough excess being used without having to start the charger with the App or RFID card

FOR APP SETUP

  1. Follow Step 1-14 of How to Commission a Project EV charger using the Project EV App (Installer)
  2. Ensure Power Allocation Charge is Disabled
  3. Press Save

  • Hi.

I find these modes really poor.

I have been caught out many times now where I have needed to charge on the cheap rate overnight tariff but forgot to set the mode back from eco or eco plus to fast charge.

Surely it is very simple to have the app automatically switch to fast charge or override the mode when in timed state to ensure the charger charger. It is obvious that the solar will never be generating between the hours of 12:30 and 4:30am

I have also found that in eco plus mode the charger does not kick in even when I have been sending 5kw back to the grid

This issue is now forcing me to look at alternative chargers.

    Regards

  • I set the Power distribution enable on and then Solar with ECO option, but when I charge my car the Power distribution enable becomes disabled and the changing rate is up to maximum.

I want to use primarily solar power to charge my car but can't get the charger to stay in the correct settings

  • Hi Pete

I have tried all different ways to get solar to be the predominant charge and none of them work as expected.

Eco+ is supposed to only use the power that is being sent back to the grid. This never works. Even when I have been sending back 6kw to the grid it does not kick in.

Eco is supposed to be solar that is going back to the grid then topped up with Grid power. I guess you could say this works. The charger is not really working anything out on this. Any consumption within the house is always solar then grid for any shortfall.

  • This is an interesting one
In the instructions on this article it states power allocation must be disabled
Yet in the power allocation setting it states power allocation must be enabled for solar charge to work

  • Hi Mark,

Thankyou for highlighting this, to clarify: "Power Allocation" must be DISABLED for solar functions & ENABLED for load balancing functions

  •

i'm trying to understand the 'Eco current limit' in the app for solar setting. Can you please explain this function

  • Hi Rudi,

This is the lower limit for the charge to initiate our solar modes.

As standard, this is around 1.32 Kw which translates to approx 6-10 amps. The unit will need a minimum of 6amps power to commence charge
